Site Speed Importance and How to Achieve It

Web DesignWeb Design

Gone are the days of slow dial-up connections, yet the importance of a high-speed website is still paramount, directly influencing your company's online visibility, reputation, traffic, leads, and revenue.

Thankfully, there are several tools and strategies to evaluate and address speed-related issues on your website.

Why Care About Site Speed?

Site speed directly influences everything from page views to bounce rates and conversions. A month-long study by Deloitte, encompassing 30 million user sessions across 37 websites, discovered that a mere tenth-of-a-second enhancement in site speed boosted page views by 5.2%, conversions by 8.4%, and notably increased the average ecommerce order value by 9.2%. To provide perspective, a human blink is roughly three times slower.

Aim for a PageSpeed Insights score of 90+ to enhance your Google ranking. Google rewards sites that offer a pleasant user experience, and site speed plays a crucial role in this. However, speed alone is not enough; it should be supplemented by high-quality content and top-notch SEO.

Measuring Site Speed

Site speed is typically measured by metrics that impact user experience. These include:

  1. First Contentful Paint (FCP): Time taken for the first content to appear on the screen.
  2. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): Time for the largest content piece to load.
  3. Speed Index: Time for everything "above the fold" to load.
  4. Time to Interactive (TTI): Time for the page to become fully interactive.
  5. Total Blocking Time (TBT): The time during which the page is unresponsive.
  6. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): Measures unexpected layout shifts.

Improving Your Site Speed Score

Boosting your site speed begins with performing a speed test to identify problem areas. You'll get a dashboard of metrics for both desktop and mobile versions of your site. Each metric will be color-coded based on performance.

Your dashboard will also suggest ways to enhance each metric, such as:

  • Image Optimisation: Compress images to WEBP format tovreduce load times.
  • Browser Caching: Enable browsers to store information locally to save load times for return visits.
  • Minimising JavaScript and CSS: Simplify your JavaScript and CSS files to increase load speed.
  • Removing Unnecessary Code and Plugins: Regularly review your site for outdated tools or code.

Though site speed is crucial, remember it's just the beginning of your SEO journey. Balance technical optimisation with creativity for the best results.
